Yakul
Brighton-based four-piece Yakul are rapidly heading towards the forefront of the UK's thriving jazz and soul scene. Inspired by forward-thinking bands and artists such as D’Angelo, Hiatus Kaiyote, J Dilla, and Common, the group showcase the intoxicating blend of styles they describe as “Future Soul” on new album Yakul At PizzaExpress Live In London, released on PX Records. Featuring a special guest appearance from MOBO-nominated saxophonist Camilla George, the twelve-track album features a rich texture of sounds and includes a selection of original compositions and covers including an assured version of Steve Lacy’s Dark Red.
With a growing reputation on the live circuit, Yakul are a popular festival band and have performed at Lost Village, Love Supreme, Funk and Soul Weekender and the London Jazz Festival amongst others. Lead track on their debut EP Getting Late, ‘Blossoming’ was voted one of the tracks of the year at Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide Awards, and the band were nominated for Best Jazz Act of the Year at the Urban Music Awards 2020.
